The global annual 30 m burned area dataset (GABAM) for 1985–2024 is now available for free download

Dataset description

Annual burned area is the spatial extent of fires occurring within a given year; it excludes fires from previous years.

The GABAM dataset is generated through an automated processing pipeline on Google Earth Engine (GEE), using all available Landsat satellite imagery on the platform. The product uses geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude), with a resolution of 0.00025° (approximately 30 m), the WGS84 horizontal datum, and the EGM96 vertical datum. It consists of 10°×10° tiles covering 180°W–180°E and 80°N–60°S.

The figure below shows the global distribution of burned area (BA) density in GABAM 2015. Burned area density is the fraction of burned pixels within each 0.25°×0.25° grid cell.

The following figure compares GABAM with the recently released Fire_cci version 5.01 global BA product. Its 250 m resolution was the highest among global products before GABAM was released.
